Pakistan rolls out first e-taxi service to stem carbon footprint

ISLAMABAD: Amid the pledge to end carbon emission, Pakistan has introduced environment-friendly e-taxi for northern areas.

Reports cited that the initiative was launched by Prime Minister’s aide on Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam in a private hotel. The eco-friendly initiative was also introduced in line with the premier’s vision, Special Assistant to the PM on Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam said in a ceremony in the country’s federal capital.

The carbon-free service will initially be run from Islamabad to Murree and Nathiagali however authorities announced to cover other hill stations in the near future. Two charging units will also be mounted in Islamabad and Murree.

PM’s aide while explaining its importance said that the initiative could save Rs2b in terms of the oil import bill.  It was also revealed that the e-taxi could go up to 250km easily with full battery charging.

The country’s first e taxi service is a joint venture of Faisal Movers and the Sapphire Group. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, he said “E-taxis will also preserve the natural beauty of areas up north, as the region is facing drastic impacts of temperature rise leading to snow slides and glacial lake outburst floods”.

Aslam further added that “Climate change is a very big issue for the country like Pakistan which is vulnerable in the region. We have initiated multiple projects in forestry and energy. We are going to clean our energy mix by shifting it to 60 percent renewable, he mentioned.

Let it be known that the northern province of Pakistan received around 88 percent of rainfall than normal which killed six while injured hundreds.

Earlier, Prime Minister Imran Khan announced the Billion Tree Tsunami project under which 10 billion trees will be planted across the country.
