Overhaul of Provincial Constituencies: Restructuring Across 18 Districts in Punjab

The recent notification from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) highlights modifications to the provincial constituencies in the 18 districts of Punjab. Due to the establishment of new districts and a growing population, the final constituency notification was updated.

The adjustments, outlined in the latest ECP notification, reflect the changing demographic landscape. In response to these shifts, the Commission strategically added and reassigned seats, maintaining a total of 297 constituencies. The ECP has also provided details of constituency delimitation, revealing a reduction in 15 constituencies across eight districts in Punjab, aligning with the latest census results.

In response to the population increase, Punjab added five seats to the state assembly, distributed over five districts. Even after granting 10 seats to recently formed districts, the total number of seats remains at 297. Notable modifications include an increase in seats for districts like Wazirabad, Taunsa, Kot Addu, Murree, Talagang, and Rajanpur, while Gujrat, Khushab, Rajanpur, and Kasur experienced a decrease. Some districts witnessed losses in seats, while others saw increases. Noteworthy modifications include the addition of seats for Taunsa, Kot Addu, Murree, Talagang, and Wazirabad, along with one additional seat each for Gujrat, Khushab, Rajanpur, and Kasur.

According to the ECP, Rawalpindi, Chakwal, and Gujranwala have lost two seats each. Additionally, there is a reduction of one provincial assembly seat in Sialkot, Multan, and Lodhran individually. Muzaffargarh sees a decrease of four seats, while Dera Ghazi Khan witnesses a reduction of two seats.

According to the official announcement, Taunsa now holds two designated seats, Kot Addu has been granted three, Murree has secured one, Talagang has acquired two, and Wazirabad has received two seats. Furthermore, Gujrat, Khushab, Rajanpur, and Kasur each have been allocated one extra seat.
