Novak Djokovic Faces Fines Over Racquet Smash Incident in Wimbledon Men’s Final

Following a racket collision with a net post during the Wimbledon men’s singles final, Novak Djokovic was assessed a £6,100 (A$11,700) fine, according to The Sun.

The Serbian was penalized for “racket abuse” when he was decisively broken in the decisive set of his defeat by Carlos Alcaraz in five sets, marking his first defeat on Centre Court in ten years. The second-ranked player in the world, who received A$2.3 million for finishing second, admitted that he was initially frustrated. However, in the fifth set, he played brilliantly to break my serve, which was sufficient to secure victory. The BBC’s viewership ratings for the final peaked at 11.3 million viewers, the highest since Andy Murray’s victory over the field in 2016, which surpassed 13.3 million.

Djokovic didn’t only test the umpire’s patience with his racket outburst in the tense final. After the match, a fortunate spectator discovered the now-iconic shattered racket. Additionally, when Djokovic took too long to serve in the second set, he was given a time violation. The umpire issued a warning for his behavior. Djokovic, who was never a fan favorite at SW19, received jeers from the Wimbledon audience for his temper tantrum, during which he broke his racket. The £6,100 fine set a record for 2023 and was the largest individual fine assessed during the competition. However, Mirra Andreeva, who received two fines totaling £6,100 during the tournament, matched this record.

Throughout the competition, the 16-year-old Russian battled to control her emotions; at one point, she was seen fiercely punching herself. After Andreeva slipped, and the umpire determined that she had thrown her racket on the ground, Keys was awarded the point. She had previously been cautioned for throwing her racket across the grass earlier in the match, making this the second racket-related incident.

Andreeva refused to shake hands with the umpire after losing to Keys. As a result of her behavior during the round of 16, she received two penalties totaling A$5,860 apiece.
