‘Not University but ramp for fashion shows’ – Govt mulls renting PM house for social, cultural events

ISLAMABAD – In another U-Turn of incumbent authorities, the Imran Khan-led PTI government has rolled back its plan to set up a university at the Prime Minister House and is likely to rent out premises for cultural and social events.

Reports in local media quoting sources said the cabinet is expected to give a final nod in this regard in a couple of days. Reportedly, the Housing Ministry mulled the idea of renting out the former workplace of the Pakistani premier for garnering funds as PM Imran Khan earlier decided to stay in his personal residence in Bani Gala amid austerity measures.

Meanwhile, reports cited that the officials have decided to rent out the PM house auditorium, two guest wings, and lawns. Local and international events like fashion shows, food festivals, cultural celebrations, exhibitions of vintage cars, diplomatic events, corporate sector programs, and seminars will likely be held in the red zone of Islamabad.

Furthermore, high-level diplomatic functions and seminars will also be arranged on the premises while the formation of two of the committees is also on the anvil which will be responsible to maintain security and decorum during the events.

Earlier in 2018, following the victory of PTI, the premier Imran Khan has promised an ambitious education agenda in his success speech as he announced to convert the PM House into a state-of-the-art federal educational institute.

Khan, who is an Oxford graduate, had then roasted the vast and lavish residence of the prime minister calling it a ‘symbol of the exploitation of the poor people.’

Later in 2019, the government changed its plan to set up a federal university at the PM House and mulled to establish an engineering and emerging technology Institute.

However, the government decided to roll back the plan as no funds were allocated in the former budget for the construction of any educational institute.
