New Curriculum Designated For Grades 9 Through 12

The education ministry has informed it that there would be a new curriculum for students in grades 9 through 12 in the educational institutions of Islamabad.

The curriculum that had been put in place in 2006 was previously put into action. The National Curriculum of Pakistan (NCP) for grades IX to XII for Urdu, English, Pakistan Studies, math, physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, and entrepreneurship, as well as Islamiat (compulsory) XI & XII, has been approved by the Secretary Ministry of Federal Education and will be used in all public and private educational institutions of Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) and the educational institutions run by the federal government in the county.

From the academic year 2024 onwards, the curriculum will be introduced for grades IX and XI, followed by the implementation of the curriculum for grades X and XII starting from the academic year 2025. The notification said that “this curriculum shall apply to all categories of students unless separately notified for any particular category of students.” According to a representative of the education ministry, the preparation of the curriculum for grades 9 through 12 was done inclusively. All phases of the curriculum creation process involved involving relevant stakeholders. Stakeholders from across Pakistan, including policymakers, academics, practitioners, parents, and students, underwent a thorough consultation process.

According to a statement, numerous curriculum workshops were organized to get feedback from the relevant parties while policy discussions were also held across Pakistan to prepare the curriculum. Additionally, everyone involved was encouraged to submit their feedback through an online portal. Following the organization of curriculum workshops in each province, a concluding workshop took place at the NCC Secretariat in Islamabad. During this workshop, selected experts from all provinces, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan gave their approval to the curriculum for nine different disciplines. Several meetings of the stakeholders were called, according to the statement, to guarantee that the curriculum was implemented. Following careful consideration, the curriculum for the institutions under the federal ministries and the Islamabad Capital Territory has been announced. An implementation strategy has also been released in addition to the notification.

Provinces, according to the statement, will evaluate the curriculum and notify students as required by law. The announcement described a three-stage process for implementing the National Curriculum from 2022 to 2023. The initial phase will see the creation of the overall study plan and the framework for evaluation by August 2023. In the second stage, which runs from August 2023 to February 2024, there will be an assessment framework, examination syllabi, including a table of specifications, training for those who will make and check exam papers, and training for teachers on formative assessment.

In the third stage, which runs from August 2024 to April 2025, the implementation of grades IX and XI in schools will take place, followed by exams by the relevant boards. Following the completion of this exercise, implementation effectiveness will be monitored and assessed.
