Mumbai Police books Google CEO for copyright violation

In an alleged copyright violation case, a FIR has been filed in Mumbai based on court orders against Google, its CEO Sunder Pichai, and five other corporate workers.

According to local police, a First Information Report (FIR) has been filed on court orders against Google, its CEO Sunder Pichai, and five other corporate workers in an alleged copyright violation case.

Suneel Darshan, a film director, and producer, had addressed the court seeking the filing of a case against Google and its top officials for suspected copyright infringement, he added.

On the orders of a magistrate’s court, the case was lodged at the MIDC Police Station in suburban Andheri, according to a police officer.

When contacted for comment, a Google spokesperson in India stated that the company relies on copyright owners to notify it of unauthorised uploads and that the company provides them with “rights management tools, such as YouTube’s Content ID system, which gives rights holders an automated way to identify, block, promote, and even make money from uploads of their content.”

“When a copyright holder informs us that a video infringes on their copyright, we swiftly remove the content in compliance with the law and terminate the accounts of users who have repeated copyright strikes,” the representative continued.
