LHC Orders Unsealing of Sheikh Rasheed’s Lal Haveli Residence

The Lahore High Court (LHC) Rawalpindi bench overturned the decision of the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) to remove former interior minister Sheikh Rashid from his home.

They also revoked the order to de-seal Lal Haveli. Following his nearly month-long “missing” status, Mr. Rashid appeared before the high court to challenge the ETPB’s order to seal the premises. Justice Mirza Viqas Rauf of the LHC stated that the ETPB shut the property without following the required procedures, and the residents were convicted without being given a chance to be heard.

The ETPB sealed seven flats of the building on January 30, 2023, one day after the ETPB asserted ownership of Lal Haveli. On the same day, Mr. Rashid went to the LHC and made allegations against ETPB employees, accusing them of “misusing their powers on the orders of political high-ups.” In September, the chairman of the Evacuee Trust Property Board cancelled the building’s registration and sealed Lal Haveli, the political office, and public secretariat of former interior minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed. The chairman’s order declared properties D-156, D-157, and D-158 (units of Lal Haveli) in Bohr Bazar, Rawalpindi City, district Rawalpindi, as evacuee trust properties under the Evacuee Trust Properties (Management and Disposal) Act, 1975.

Lal Haveli, an ancient structure in Bohar Bazaar, was originally constructed by Dhan Raj Sehgal more than a century ago for Budhan Bai, a Muslim “dancing girl” from Sialkot. Nonetheless, when Sheikh Rashid Ahmed ventured into the realm of parliamentary politics in 1980, it turned into a significant political centre. While speaking to the media alongside his lawyer Sardar Abdul Raziq, Mr. Rashid reiterated his condemnation of the violence that took place on May 9.

He reiterated that the events of May 9 were regrettable, and he also condemned the individuals involved in that incident, as he has done multiple times. He added, “The Pakistan Army is one of the greatest armies in the world, and I always stood with them,” praising General Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff, and Lt-Gen Nadeem Ahmed Anjum, Director of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

Lal Heveli and the tragic love story of the Dancing Girl of Rawalpindi who vanished

According to Dawn.com, between September 17 and October 22, I embarked on a transformative pilgrimage that led to a change in my identity as Sheikh Rashid. I cannot fully describe the challenging conditions I endured during this time. The leader of the Awami Muslim League, Sheikh Rashid, declared his intention to participate in the upcoming elections against the Pakistan Democratic Movement, asserting his determination to run even if he faces arrest once more.
