Journalist Imran Riaz Khan returns after 4 months with Speech Impairment

After being missing for more than four months, senior journalist Imran Riaz Khan arrived “safely” home on Monday morning, but with severe speech impairment.

Journalist and anchor Mr. Imran Riaz Khan has been safely rescued, according to a post by Sialkot police on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), confirming the story. His family is currently with him. In a post on social media platform X, his lawyer Ashfaq declared, “By God’s particular blessing, grace, and mercy, I have brought back my prince.”

Ashfaq added that the process “took a lot of time” due to numerous challenges encountered, including a “weak judiciary” and the existing status of the constitution, worsened by a sense of legal powerlessness. In a separate interview with a foreign media outlet, Ashfaq revealed that he had a three-hour discussion with the journalist at his home following his release. He asserted that Riaz’s emotional and mental state was not very stable. He has lost a significant amount of weight in the last four months and is traumatized. He has trouble speaking clearly and even struggles to clarify things and finish sentences, according to Ashfaq.

The attorney stated that for his client to fully recover, they would conduct the appropriate medical tests and visit the doctors. “I believe that the entire recovery process could take at least three to four months. Legal actions against Imran’s incarceration will only be taken as per his instructions once he has fully recovered,” the attorney continued. Imran’s homecoming was also announced by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), who added that “he is one of many names suffering from enforced disappearances.”

In addition, the party called for the release of all “political prisoners and prisoners of conscience” who are detained in “illegal” ways. According to journalist Wajahat Khan, who claimed to have spoken with Imran’s relatives, the latter is “weak and not in the best of health.” Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Usman Anwar was granted one more opportunity to bring the journalist to court by September 26 during the case’s final hearing in the Lahore High Court (LHC). The IG responded that a meeting of the joint working group would take place shortly, so he needed a little more time. He also said that the working group had been established in response to the LHC order and that a meeting with the intelligence director was scheduled for that day.

IG Anwar informed the court during the previous session that he had met with the petitioner and provided him and his attorney with an update on the status of this case, as per the court’s direction. According to IG Anwar, the issue was “progressing favorably.” The petitioner’s attorney had already informed the court at that time that a significant development could occur in the case at any time. In the wake of the riots on May 9, the anchorperson, a fervent and outspoken supporter of the ousted PM and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan and his ideas was reportedly detained by the police on May 11.
