Islamabad High Court Halts Sentence for Ice Cream Vendor Farmanullah

On Tuesday, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) granted an extension to the bail of an individual engaged in selling ice cream. This vendor had previously received a three-month prison term and a Rs0.5 million fine for placing his cart on the premises of Faisal Mosque.

Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri presided over the case, considering the plea submitted by the ice cream vendor, Farmanullah, challenging his sentence. During the proceedings, the IHC questioned the CDA lawyer about the perceived disparity in the application of the law, specifically in favor of the less privileged. The court pointed out the prevalence of numerous ice cream vendors openly conducting business in the federal capital and inquired why only Farman had been targeted by the authorities.

The attorney representing the Capital Development Authority (CDA) requested additional time to prepare for presenting arguments in the case.

Barrister Umar Aijaz Gilani, the lawyer for Farmanullah, contended that his client did not engage in any wrongdoing by establishing his cart on state-owned land to make a living. Subsequently, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) granted an extension to the bail of Farman, the ice cream vendor, and temporarily halted his punishment until the Islamabad sessions court reached a decision.
