Headmaster, peon cleared of blasphemy charges

A Karachi sessions court has acquitted a school’s headmaster and a peon of blasphemy charges brought against them following allegations that they burned Islamiat textbooks.

After the prosecution failed to sustain the claims against the headmaster Javed Akhter and the peon Muhammad Shahid Khan, both employees of Government Badri School Liaquatabad, Additional District and Sessions Judge Dr Shabana Waheed gave a decision clearing them.

In August 2018, the complainant Muhammad Jahangir stated that he and his granddaughter witnessed the headmaster and the peon burning Islamiat textbooks. On the basis of his assertions, locals gathered there, and the situation quickly deteriorated.

The testimony presented against the headmaster and peon, according to the judge, contained significant discrepancies. During cross-examination, the complainant admitted that he did not specifically see religious books being burned, but only paper.

“In my honest opinion, the prosecution’s evidence is exceedingly untrustworthy and insufficient to repose a belief in it for recording a conviction on a capital charge,” the judge stated.
