Govt successfully passes bill giving voting rights to overseas Pakistanis amid commotion

Amid ruckus by the opposition, the government has successfully passed the Elections (Amendment) Bill, 2021, giving voting rights to Pakistanis living abroad and also allowing the electronic voting machines to be used in the next general elections.

This prompted the opposition to tear the copies of the agenda and staged walk out of the joint parliament session.

Following the commotion, the opposition members gathered in the office of the opposition leader – Shahbaz Sharif – to chart future course of action.

Politicians from the opposition parties term the passage of the bill an alleged effort to steal the next general elections. Several objections were raised by the opposition member parliamentarians but were all ruled out by the speaker, allowing the government for smooth sailing of the passage of the bill.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi cast aside the allegations of the opposition on the electronic voting machines as a government’s bid to rig general polls.
