FBI Raid in Utah Ends in Fatal Shooting of Man Who Threatened Biden

An FBI operation on Wednesday resulted in the shooting death of a man who had made violent threats against President Joe Biden and other public figures online.

Just hours before President Biden’s scheduled visit to the state, agents were attempting to serve an arrest warrant at Craig Robertson’s house in Utah. According to a criminal complaint, Robertson made threats on Facebook against Mr. Biden and a prosecutor investigating possible criminal activity by Donald Trump. The FBI did not provide further information.

In Provo, located around 40 miles (65 km) south of Salt Lake City, the raid took place at approximately 06:15 local time. Robertson posted images of firearms and threats to kill Mr. Biden and Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan district attorney overseeing an investigation into Mr. Trump’s payment of hush money to an adult film star, among other things, according to a federal complaint. Other messages, according to the complaint, were directed at both Letitia James, the attorney general of New York, and Merrick Garland, the US attorney general.

“I hear Biden is visiting Utah,” Robertson wrote on Facebook, “wiping the dust off the M24 sniper rifle and digging up my old ghillie suit.” On two of Robertson’s Facebook accounts, dozens of threatening remarks and images of firearms were uploaded. According to the legal complaint, federal authorities witnessed Robertson’s actions in March, during which he made threats against Mr. Bragg on Truth Social, a social media platform owned by Mr. Trump. The organization informed the FBI’s National Threat Operations Centre.

FBI personnel subsequently went to see the individual under suspicion, who informed them that the online content was merely a “fantasy.”

he interaction concluded with the individual stating, “Our conversation is finished! Do not come back unless you have a warrant!” Later writings by Robertson alluded to his encounter with the agents, featuring images of him dressed in sniper-style camouflage, and again inciting the anger of public servants. Even on Tuesday, when he posted, “Perhaps Utah will become famous this week as the site where a sniper took down Biden the Marxist,” the messages persisted.

Thursday will mark Mr. Biden’s first trip to Utah in his capacity as president. He will visit a veterans hospital and attend a fundraising event in Park City.
