Elon Musk Introduces Grok: A Competing AI Chatbot to Challenge ChatGPT

Grok, the first product from Elon Musk’s previously revealed AI business, xAI, has just been released. It directly competes with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and other chatbots that utilize generative AI.

Musk recently made his chatbot public on platform X, claiming that it is “the best there is” in “some elements.” Grok is currently outperforming GPT-3.5 in a variety of academic assessments, including coding and math. It is powered by a novel engine named Grok-1, which receives real-time data from platform X. According to xAI, in a series of evaluations using common machine-learning benchmarks designed to measure math and reasoning skills, Grok surpassed all other models in its computing class, including ChatGPT-3.5 and Inflection-1.

Models like GPT-4, trained with more data and computational power, surpassed it. In addition to using conventional machine learning benchmarks, xAI further assessed Grok, Claude-2, and GPT-4 using the 2023 Hungarian national high school mathematics examinations. GPT-4 obtained a B grade with a score of 68%, while Grok and Claude-2 both received C grades with scores of 59% and 55%, respectively. Musk also stated that Grok is designed to respond with a touch of humor and sarcasm and can answer “spicy questions” that are typically rejected by most other AI systems.

Grok is still in its early beta stage, but xAI claims it is rapidly improving every week. To prevent misuse, the company is working on implementing new security measures. Grok is available for $16 per month and is currently accessible to a select group of people in the US as part of the X Premium Plus membership.
