Elephant thought to be male for 12 years turns out to be female at Karachi’s Safari Park

Owing to the deteriorating health of elephants at Karachi Zoo and Safari Park, a team of foreign veterinarians have recently arrived in the city.

Upon arrival, they immediately went to check the ailing animals. After doing an ultrasound, it was revealed that both elephants at Safari Park are female.

For 12 years, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) officials have believed that one of the elephants is a male.

A team of experts from the international animal welfare organisation FOUR PAWS conducted a medical examination of four African elephants at the Karachi Zoo and Safari Park.

After ultrasound and other examination they ruled that elephant that was said to be male was actually a female.

In a hearing on November 15, the Sindh High Court urged the animal welfare experts to examine the condition of the animals. The KMC officials said that the elephants were brought to the zoo in 2009 when they were just two to 2.5 years old.
