Defying stereotypes, meet Pakistan’s first female firefighter

Firefighting – a profession typically associated with men – is not now considered a male-only tribe. Breaking stereotypes, Shazia Parveen from Punjab’s Vehari district has got this laurel of becoming Pakistan’s first woman firefighter.

She became part of the Rescue 1122 emergency service in 2010 and joined the fire department. Since then, she participated in multiple rescue operations and fire extinguishing incidents coping with dangerous situations.

Parveen said she know her job carries risks but the sense of satisfaction of serving someone and helping people in emergencies is what satiates her soul. She said people normally associate women with some typical professions like nursing, medicine, office work, or teaching.

But she was lucky enough that her pillar, her father late Rehmat Ullah fully backed her in her decisions and pursued her passion.

Shazia believes that Pakistani women can do whatever they like as they are highly skillful and physically strong. They can take on any challenge. The young firefighter also spoke highly of her teammates who encouraged and boosted confidence in her.
