LAHORE: Celebrated TikToker and Pakistani influencer Jannat Mirza landed herself in hot waters after she spotted ‘disrespecting the cross of Jesus’ in a now-deleted clip on the video-sharing platform.
Catholic patron Raja Walter, Saleem Silvester, and other activists approached the Cyber Wing of Federal investigators, seeking a case against the first Pakistani TikToker to gain 10 million followers.
Copy of the police complaint making rounds on social media stated that Mirza, the top-rated TikTok celebrity, committed an alleged blasphemy as she can be seen hanging a cross of Jesus on her pant’s zipper. The complainant further added that the clip in which Mirza can be seen acting with her fiancé Umar Butt irked Christian’s community.
It further stated that she desecrated the cross of Jesus, despite knowing that it depicted the principal symbol of recalling the crucifixion of Jesus Christ thus wearing it on pants zipper can be seen as absolute disrespect. A case should be lodged against the TikTok star and she should be booked under section 295-A of the Pakistan Penal code.
One of the complainants, while speaking with the Union of Catholic Asian News, said removing such videos after public outcry doesn’t make any difference. We demand a case against Jannat Mirza. If a Christian had done it, they would set his house and children on fire, he further added.
Meanwhile, the accused, Jannat Mirza, in the police case has not yet responded or even apologized for the act till the filing of this report.
Let it be known that, blasphemy laws in South Asian country carry serious punishments. Deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings said to be a crime under section 295-A of PPC. The violation of the act shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years, or with fine, or with both.
