Shortly after being officially opened by District Chairman Kumail Hyder Shah and Sukkur’s Mayor Barrister Arsalan Shaikh, a recently built bridge in Sukkur unexpectedly gave way.
An image of Mayor Sukkur crossing the new bridge with a large group of people has gone viral on social media.
Mayor Sukkur is the brother of former PPP MNA Nauman Shaikh and the son of former Senator Islamuddin Shaikh. The District Chairman, Nasir Hussain Shah, the son of an ex-MPA, also attended the inaugural event. Local leaders can be seen crossing the bridge in the popular video, including the mayor and chairman. The bridge eventually collapses.
The apparent overload and possibly poor material quality are revealed as the bridge collapses, and panic sets in. The bridge was built to provide city residents with access to the recently installed ferry boats and jet skis. The mayor and chairman’s entourage can be seen pleading with the person filming the incident to stop filming, sparking additional controversy. This has raised the question of whether there were any prior safety issues with the bridge that were known. The existence of inquiries into the reason for the collapse is still unknown.
