Breakthrough Investigation: US Police Obtain Search Warrant for 1996 Murder Case of Tupac Shakur

The murder of the artist Tupac Shakur over 30 years ago remains unsolved, according to authorities in Nevada who announced on Tuesday that a search warrant was executed this week.

A drive-by shooting in Las Vegas on the evening of September 7, 1996, claimed the life of Shakur, one of the most influential figures in hip-hop. He was 25. The neighboring city of Henderson, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, received the search warrant on Monday.

They may have been looking in the wrong places, or they may not have known where to look. In a brief phone contact, Aden OcampoGomez, the department’s spokeswoman, stated that due to the ongoing investigation, she was unable to share any additional information on the most recent development in the case.

Marion “Suge” Knight, the owner of Death Row Records, was sitting next to Assata Shakur when they were both shot to death. The gunfire occurred as a white Cadillac drew up next to the two people who were stopped at a red light near the Las Vegas Strip, according to the police.

Shakur, who had been shot several times, was taken to a hospital but passed away a week later. The investigation immediately stagnated, according to Las Vegas police, in part due to witnesses’ refusal to participate, as they have claimed in the past. Nevada has no statute of limitations for homicide prosecution.

Shakur, who is widely regarded as one of the most influential and versatile rappers ever, has been nominated for six Grammy Awards. He achieved the top position on the album charts five times, with his albums “Me Against the World” (1995), “All Eyez on Me” (1996), and three posthumous releases: “The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory” (1996) under the alias Makaveli, “Until the End of Time” (2001), and “Loyal to the Game” (2004).

Snoop Dogg presented him with his induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. A posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was awarded to the rapper in June of this year. And in May, Oakland, California, renamed a section of a street near Lake Merritt, where he formerly resided, as Tupac Shakur Way.

Tupac Shakur and other figures from his life have been honored in museum exhibits. “Wake Me When I’m Free,” was exhibited in 2021. Despite having a brief five-year professional music career, Shakur amassed 21 Billboard Hot 100 singles, including the top 10 successes “Dear Mama” and “Old School” in 1995, and his most well-known song, “How Do U Want It/California Love” with K-Ci and JoJo.

The latter song from his final studio album and debut for Death Row Records, “All Eyez on Me,” spent two weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. Shakur has sold 33 million albums, or 41 million if you include equivalent sales of tracks and streaming services, according to the entertainment statistics company Luminate. The rapper has received 10.1 billion on-demand audio and video streams.
