Bounty of Rs1mn announced by minister for anyone who can hack Pakistan-made EVMs

Ministry of Science and Technology Shibli Faraz has announced a reward of Rs 1million for hacking Pakistani made Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

There is a heated debate on Electronic Voting Machines among all the members of assembly, as a consequence, Minister of Science and technology Shibli Faraz while addressing queries of opposition and Election Commission of Pakistan announced a reward of Rs1 million for anyone who will hack EVMs.

He said 400,000 machines had been produced locally and the cost of manufacturing per machine is estimated between Rs75,000-70,000.

“We will challenge hackers to hack the electronic voting machine and if they can hack it, we will give them an award of Rs1 million,” statement made by Shibli Faraz.

There is heated debate between the government, the opposition, and other stakeholders over the use of EVMs, with government claiming it is a way forward to make elections in transparent.

Shibli Faraz said that a 37 point objection letter was sent to government by ECP and in it, 27 points were not related to EVMs, rather they were about ECP’s capacity to use them.

“Only 10 points were in direct objection to the electronic voting machine.” He also claimed that the Ministry of Science and Technology had answered all the queries of ECP and has provided them with almost all reports they had sought, the remaining reports will be sent to them in the coming days.

Three days back, the ECP said, “EVMs cannot be used to conduct free and transparent elections in line with the constitution.” The ECP, explaining why the EVM can not stop rigging, said it can be “hacked”, easily “tampered with”, and the “software can be easily changed”. Shibli Faraz made this statement in consequence of objection to ECP.
