BMW has unveiled another another cutting-edge and potentially game-changing technology for its automobiles. The carmaker exhibited the iX Flow electric SAV outfitted with E Ink technology, which allows the car to alter its complete colour, in a live demonstration at CES 2022.
Neither the technology nor the automobile is brand new. Electrophoretic technology has been found in a variety of other applications, including cellphones and other electronics, with the Amazon Kindle serving as a classic example. Similarly, the BMW iX is not a new automobile, as BMW only released the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) last month in a number of international markets.
The specifically built body wrap for the all-electric iX SUV model, which employs the same technology as Amazon’s Kindle e-reader, is “bringing the automobile body to life,” according to the German automaker.
By activating electronic ink in the wraparound shell, a driver can alter the colour of the car’s exterior at the touch of a button, allowing the colour to vary between black and white or even light and dark stripes.
“You can choose what you want to wear, what your social media status is, and what your car looks like,” Stella Clarke, BMW’s project lead on the vehicle, stated. Clarke said that the technology might be used to locate the car by flashing it when the driver is looking for it, or to outwardly indicate the vehicle’s battery capacity.
According to BMW, the effect is achieved by applying an electrical charge to microcapsules contained in a liquid encapsulated in the wrap, which include particles of white and black pigments. Depending on whether a negative or positive charge is supplied, the white or black pigments gather at the microcapsule’s surface, causing the colour to alternate.
The prototype automobile was unveiled at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, where automotive companies are increasingly exhibiting alongside mobile phone, gadget, and TV screen manufacturers.
