Police seizes 7kg of Uranium for the second time in India, Pakistan warns world of serious implications

ISLAMABAD/NEW DELHI: Pakistan has called the international community as India mishandled highly nuclear material uranium for the second time depicting a major failure in nuclear safety.

In a recent event in the Indian state Maharashtra, law enforcers seized over seven kilograms of uranium available for being sold on the internet.

At least two men have been apprehended by the anti-terrorism squad for illegally possessing the highly radioactive substance which according to an estimate worth around $2.9 million.

According to Mumbai police, they got a tip-off that one of the sellers, Jigar Pandya, is dealing to sell pieces of uranium. He was later held after top cops in India’s financial capital laid a trap by luring him to get instant money.

The probe revealed that the other person involved in the dealing of nuclear material is identified as Abu Tahir. Police officials claimed to recover a huge quantity of substance with the arrest of Tahir.

A case has been lodged under Atomic Energy Act, 1962 after the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre of India confirmed that the seized material is highly radioactive and could be dangerous for human life.

Let it be known that uranium is used in nuclear explosives and advanced medical techniques. This is the second time in a row that India failed to protect nuclear material. Earlier in 2016, almost 9kg of depleted uranium was recovered in the same state of the south Asian country.

Soon after the leak of the news in international media, some quarters began expressing apprehensions that it could have landed in the hands of right-wing extremists, who could have used it for terror activities.
