In the New York attack, an Asian woman was punched 125 times. The suspect is charged with attempted murder as a hate crime. The security video showed the 67-year-old woman being spit on and beaten by the perpetrator.
A man has been charged with attempted murder, which police described as a “brutal hate crime” against an Asian woman in New York State last week.
Tammel Esco, 42, was caught calling a 67-year-old woman “Asian B ***”, entered a building behind her, and beat her severely. Esco was taken into custody shortly afterward when officers found him outside the building. NYC police announced the arrest and released a security video from the vestibule area of the building on Monday.
The video shows the woman trying to open another door in the lobby when she was hit on the head from behind and fell to the ground.
“This is one of the most appalling attacks I have ever seen; to beat a helpless woman is despicable and targeting her because of her race makes it more so, “Police Commissioner John J. Mueller said in a statement.
The woman was not publicly identified, Police resources say she is stable and recovering at a hospital. She has facial bone fractures and was bleeding from his brain.
“This defendant must be held to the maximum punishment allowed by law to send a clear message that hateful, violent behavior will not be tolerated in our communities.” The New York City mayor, Mike Spano, said.
