Arooj Aftab bags two nominations for Grammy’s

Pakistani singer-cum-musician Arooj Aftab has delivered a huge surprise to the nation with her two nominations at one of the most illustrious music award shows in the world, the Grammys.

She is contesting in the category of ‘Best New Artist’, alongside singer and song-writer Olivia Rodrigo, breakout star The Kid Laroi, hip-hop star Saweetie, indie-pop group Glass Animals and The Kid LAROI. She is also nominated in the category of ‘Best Global Music Performance’.

Born in Saudi Arabia, the young singer shifted to Lahore, Pakistan at the tender age of 11. In a past interview with a magazine, Aftab said she is fond of songs by Mariah Carey, Billie Holiday and Begum Akhtar. She self-taught her guitar playing and began propagating her music on the internet.

As soon as she sung the covers of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelijah and Amir Zaki’s Mera Pyar Tum He To Ho, Aftab got recognition as one of the first ‘indie’ artists of the country.

Aftab’s recent studio album Vulture Prince was released in May this year by New Amsterdam Records. The album holds seven tracks among which Mohabbat and Last Night got accolades from critics and audiences.

In July, Arooj’s single Mohabbat had also got a space on former U.S. president Barack Obama’s summer playlist as well.
