Accused in Dua Mangi kidnapping strolls-free after making a stop at Tariq Road for shopping

On Friday, two police officers were remanded in custody, while Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah ordered the suspension of Courts SSP Azam Durrani after it was revealed that a suspect in the kidnappings of Bisma Saleem and Dua Mangi had fled.

According to the incident’s first information report (FIR), Zohaib Ali Qureshi, one of the suspects in the 2019 kidnappings, appeared in court on Thursday. Qureshi and the police officers who accompanied him to the hearing stopped at a mall where the accused “intended to shop,” but he disappeared.

Before fleeing from a retail mall on Karachi’s Tariq Road, East SSP Qamar Raza Jiskhani acknowledged that the accused was in police custody and had been placed before the court on the kidnapping charges on Thursday.

The Ferozabad police then filed a complaint against court police constable Habib Zafar and head constable Mohammed Naveed for their alleged incompetence in allowing Qureshi to flee. Qureshi has been nominated for the FIR as well.

Qureshi was presented before the civil and judicial magistrate (East) at the City Courts on Thursday, according to the FIR, and the judge had set the next hearing for February 9.

The chief constable has claimed that after hearing, he and Qureshi drove to Tariq Road in a private car, where the accused told him he wanted to go shopping at Dolmen Mall.

Qureshi went into the mall and “fled after deceiving me,” according to Head Constable Naveed.

A man, identified as Qureshi, is seen meandering around the mall’s exit for a few seconds before leaving with shopping bags in hand, according to CCTV footage.

On Friday, Naveed and Zafar appeared before a judicial magistrate and were detained in police custody until Monday.

At the next hearing, the judge has also requested a report from the investigating officer.

Meanwhile, Sindh’s chief minister took notice of Qureshi’s escape and ordered the Courts SSP to be suspended immediately.

He also asked the Sindh inspector general of police and the home secretary to take “severe action” in the case, according to a statement released by the Chief Minister’s Office. He also ordered the formation of a police team to arrest Qureshi right away.
