36 Pakistani universities featured in Times Higher Education ranking

ISLAMABAD – At least thirty-six public and private sector universities of the South Asian country are listed in Times Higher Education Ranking 2021, marking a major improvement in the global standing of the country’s higher education.

Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood took to his official handle where he shared a series of tweets about the development. “Pakistani universities make headlines in UK’s Times Higher Education ranking of worlds universities in 2022. For the first time, 7 Pakistani universities in top-800 (up from 2), 11 in the top-1000, and 21 in the top 1600,” a tweet reads.

One varsity listed in the 201-300 rank band, two in the 301-400, five in the 401-600, nine in the 601-800, ten in the 801-1,000, and nine in the 1,001+ rank band.

The education minister further added: “Last three years have seen a greatest upward movement of Pakistani universities in global rankings. We still have ways to go, but the direction is right, the pace is good. Credit to the PTI government and the universities that made us proud.

The National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) makes it to the top 300, while the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, and COMSATS University Islamabad are listed in the 400 rank band.

Furthermore, the NED University of Engineering and Technology and the University of Lahore were in the 401-600 rank band, whereas Fatima Jinnah Women University, Jinnah Sindh Medical University, and the University of Sargodha were named in the 601-800 rank band.

The list further added that Dow University of Health Sciences, Quaid-e-Azam University, and The Iqra University are listed in the 801-1,000 rank band.

The Times Higher Education Impact Ranking is the global performance index that assesses higher education institutions against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It classifies the varsities on four broad areas including research, stewardship, outreach, and teaching.

Let it be known that the 2021 Impact Rankings is the third edition and the overall ranking includes 1,117 universities from 94 countries.

Times Higher Education (THE), the UK-based leading universities rankings agency, officials met the Federal Minister for Education Shafqat Mahmood to present the latest rankings of varsities. Chief Knowledge Officer Phil Baty and Chief Data Scientist Dr. Shepard represented the TIMES team. The officials felicitated Mahmood for the brilliant performance of Pakistani Universities in the World Universities Rankings 2022.

In the annual publication of Times Higher Education, it noted that Pakistan has emerged as the world’s fastest-improving nation on its metrics of teaching, research, specifically on the Research Citations, and Teaching scores.

For 2022 THE Rankings, the Times Higher Education team analyzed 108 million citations and 4.4 million research publications.

At least 430,000 data points from 2144 participating institutions were also analyzed. Times Higher Education conducts an annual academic and research repute survey and its results are also used for rankings.

Higher Education Commission has been taking major steps for the empowerment of the higher education sector through investment in human resources, raising academic and research standards, and development of physical and technological infrastructure of the universities.
