28-Year-Old Woman Uses False Identity To Enroll In High School

To learn English, a 28-year-old lady in Louisiana pretended to be a teen and enrolled in high school, according to officials.

According to a press release from the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, Martha Jessenia Gutierrez-Serrano, 28, registered at Hahnville High School in June 2022 and completed the entire academic year of 2022–2023. According to the announcement, school administrators informed the sheriff’s office in May that they had received a tip that a student listed as being 17 was an adult in her mid-20s. According to detectives, Marta Elizabeth Serrano-Alvarado, 46, and Gutierrez-Serrano used a fake passport and birth certificate to enroll Gutierrez-Serrano in school, the sheriff’s office stated.

According to the announcement, both people were taken into custody this week and were each given a single count of damaging public documents. It is not immediately clear if they have legal counsel. Sheriff Greg Champagne of St. Charles Parish mentioned in a press briefing that Gutierrez-Serrano confessed to detectives that she joined the school intending to improve her English skills. We can all sympathize with the young woman’s desire to learn English well and possibly pursue higher study, added Champagne. While attending school, she focused on her studies, remained independent, diligently completed her assignments, and never caused any disruptions or disciplinary issues.

At the news conference, Superintendent Ken Oterling announced that St. Charles Parish Public Schools is currently evaluating enrollment procedures and carrying out an audit of enrollment records for every current student. Oterling stated that the educational system will offer extra mandatory training to all employees at the school and district levels, with a specific focus on developing their ability to identify documents that may be fake.
