When John Cena announced Osama bin Laden’s death in Pakistan raid at live WWE show (VIDEO)

WASHINGTON: World marks the tenth anniversary of US covert operation today that left former Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden dead.

Ten years ago, former US president Barack Obama announced the killing of Osama bin Laden following a midnight raid in Pakistan’s garrison city of Abbottabad. News of the killing of Bin Laden was met with celebrations across the United States.

Following the announcement from the democratic leader, WWE superstar John Cena announced the same news to the wrestling fans during a pay-per-view event of Extreme Rules in Tampa, Florida.

At that moment, when more than 10,000 people at the wrestling venue witnessed the live performance, more than 200,000 at home watched the WWE event on TV remained unaware of what just happened on the other side of the world.

That time just got momentous for fans who heard the news of Bin Laden not from mainstream media but from their favorite wrestler who announced the news after winning the tenth championship in a steel cage match at Extreme Rules.

The American professional wrestler standing tall at the end addressed the cheering crowd. “I walk out here every night with hustle loyalty and respect on my sleeve. That is a credo that I have adopted from the men and women who defend the freedom of this country. The president has just announced that we have caught and compromised to a permanent end Osama bin Laden. This is something tonight but I feel damn proud to be an American”, he announced by holding the WWE Championship title belt.

The reactions of thousands of Americans in the arena seemed almost supernatural as almost everybody cheered it up by chanting ‘USA’.

Moments from the PPV event has gone down in wrestling infamy as one of the most nationalistic things the WWE has ever witnessed.

Cena, who now is a big name in Hollywood, while speaking in a 2012 interview stated that ‘he had heard the news from a cameraman at the event but felt it was the right thing to do’.

‘The only thing I felt in that moment was the need to tell every fan because as an American it was the right thing to do’. The speech of WWE star on that night remains one of its most polarising moments that is still talked about ten years later.

Let it be known that nearly ten years after the September attacks, a global manhunt came to an end as the United States apprehended former Al Qaeda chief who evaded them for so long.

The year 2021 also marks another milestone in world history as US president Biden announced the withdrawal of all American troops from Afghanistan completing the military exit by the 20th anniversary of September 11, 2001, attacks that drew the US into its forever war.

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in the Afghan capital as US soldiers still present under President Joe Biden’s orders, beyond the May 1 withdrawal deadline agreed in the previous US administration.

The Taliban reacted to Biden’s delay move with threatened consequences besides boycotting the key conference in Istanbul that had been planned to facilitate the Afghan peace process.
