What is the Milk Crate Challenge and why has TikTok banned it? Here is all you need to know

CULVER CITY: Chinese-owned video sharing platform TikTok used to make the headlines for all the wrong reasons and this time it’s about the Milk Crate Challenge that takes the internet by storm in wake of some risky painful falls after which the app has banned the trend on its platform.

A spokesperson of the video-sharing platform told a publication that “the app prohibits content that promotes or glorifies dangerous acts, and we remove videos and redirect searches to our Community Guidelines to discourage such content. We encourage everyone to exercise caution in their behavior whether online or off.”

In the bizarre challenge, the users take on a set of makeshift pyramid-like a staircase, which is made up of crates, in an attempt to climb to the top and then come down without getting tripped.

As the clips send the internet into a frenzy, the challenge also spreads on other social media platforms including Instagram and Twitter as well. #Milkcratechallenge and #Cratechallenge, two of the famous hashtags have interestingly amassed more than 71 million views in recent weeks. However, following a ban a search for either tag now surfaces a message saying there are no results found.

It also made headlines after medical professionals voice their concerns about the trend and the danger it poses to the individuals trying it. Many doctors especially surgeons and emergency specialists claimed that they have treated individuals with head injuries.

An orthopedic surgeon of John Hopkins while speaking with a publication told that the height and instability of the crates are what puts people at the risk for serious injuries that include life-changing injuries.

According to a report, a woman in Dallas injured herself while taking part in the viral challenge, while at least two others had fractured bones after falling off the crates. Jefferson Health in New Jersey claimed that they treated a patient who suffered several fractured ribs after he tripped badly.

Meanwhile, some people attempted the stunts barefooted, while others performed the tasks wearing high heels. Some of the app users filmed them eating different foods – to make it more difficult to perform.

Despite the variety in tricks, one thing that was common is people tumbling to the ground as they try to cross the shaky pyramid-like structure. Many users took it to next level as it was done at parties, and some reportedly tried it during the gender reveal events.
