Tokyo Olympics 2020: Pakistani swimmer Bisma Khan breaks national record, bows out

TOKYO – Lahore-born swimmer Bisma Khan, who represents Pakistan on universality invitation from the world swimming body, broke the national record at Tokyo Olympics 2020, but bowed out of the mega international sporting event in the first round.

With 27.78 seconds, the 19-year-old finished 7th out of eight athletes in Heat 5, with an overall rank of 56 out of 81 swimmers in the 50 meters freestyle category.

Khan, who follows a legacy of swimmers as her elder sister Kiran is one of the most celebrated Pakistani athletes, was 1.44 seconds behind the best swimmer in her heat and 3.76 seconds overall.

Despite the disqualification, the young diver improved on her personal best [that was 27.90 seconds] which is also a national record in this particular category.

Khalid Khan, the father of Bisma who now works as a coach, while speaking with The Independent Urdu said young Khan has been interested in swimming since her childhood. She practices for around four to six hours on a daily basis. ‘Bisma is determined to make a name for herself and for Pakistan in the world by winning a gold medal in swimming’, he mentioned saying that Khan’s dream is to bring a gold medal in swimming at Tokyo Olympics.

Let it be known that Pakistan’s premier female swimmer also holds the title of current national swimming champion and she bagged different national records in various events. Furthermore, she has won the gold medal at the South Asian Junior Aquatic Championship, secured third place position in 4th Islamic Solidarity Games 2017, and a silver medal at the 13th South Asian Games 2019.

It is worth noting that the South Asian country has sent 21 swimmers in Olympics history since 1948. Syed Muhammad Haseeb Tariq and Bisma Khan are the latest athletes to join the prestigious list.

For Olympics 2020, around 10 participants have gone to participate at the world’s greatest stage of all, and six have been knocked out and are no more part of the mega event.

Earlier, 21-year-old Gujranwala-based weightlifter, Talha Talib returned to Pakistan after he missed securing the gold medal, but still made Pakistan proud. He finished fifth in the 67kg category with an impressive performance of overall lifting of 320 KG weight and won laurels from the countrymen.
