The FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023, which begins in Indian towns Bhubaneswar and Rourkela in nine days, will feature four of the top Asian hockey-playing nations.
Pakistan, a three-time world champion, will not compete in the 16-team tournament because they were unable to place among the top four teams in the Asia Cup. India, Japan, Malaysia, and Korea, along with all the other Asian nations that play hockey, will all be on display. The number of participating nations in the Hockey World Cup has increased from the previous limitation of merely 12 to sixteen. Pakistan, which is now placed 17th in the world, is omitted from the four-year event.
“It is very regrettable that Pakistan is not one of the 16 teams competing in the World Cup. We won’t have any easier chances to qualify for the competition. Even though it was a cakewalk, we missed it. Being a former world champion, Khawaja Junaid, one of the players on the World Cup-winning team in 1994, stated, “I feel horrible and depressed not to see Pakistan as one of the participating teams in India. The Pakistani hockey players, he continued, “could have acquired the essential exposure by playing against the world’s greatest teams,” and I am extremely worried about them.
The FIH Men’s World Cup will be hosted by the same country twice for the first time because the 2018 edition was also held in the Indian state. On the first day of the FIH Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023 Bhubaneswar, Rourkela, matches will be played in both Bhubaneswar and Rourkela. The inaugural match will take place on January 13 at the Kalinga stadium in Bhubaneswar between Argentina, who won the gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics, and South Africa, the current African champions and champions of the most recent FIH Hockey Men’s Nations Cup.
