Steve Rotheram clinches second term as Liverpool city region mayor

LONDON: British Labour Party politician Steve Rotheram seeking re-election emerged victorious as mayor of Liverpool city region.

The 59-year-old remained triumph despite not so easy campaign marred by controversies in the local Labour party. He won with 58.3 per cent of the vote [198,726 votes], slightly down from 59.3 per cent which he took earlier in previous polling in 2017.

On the other hand, conservative contender Jade Marsden remained runner up with 66,702 votes, while the Greens bags 40,211 votes and Liberal Democrats took 35,049 votes. According to City Council, the voter turnout in the region was just over 30 per cent.

Rotheram termed his victory as a massive vote of confidence in the power of devolution. Adding that I’ve done so far, now the government has to back further devolution. Adding that, the Labour Party is not just a passing vehicle to jump on to promote personal ideology. We need to stop saying that we’ll listen and start hearing what people are telling us, he added.

Speaking about his contribution in hard days of the pandemic in Britain, he said I stood up for our region throughout the pandemic, taking on Boris Johnson to win more funding and support for our councils, improved testing and a proper furlough scheme.

The British politician was born into a Labour family, his father was a truck driver. Soon after leaving the school, he became a bricklayer and set up his own company by the age of 22.

Rotheram, the re-elected mayor, began his political career when he was elected to serve as a councillor in 2002, before swapping his council seat for Westminster in 2010. Metro Mayor previously worked as parliamentary private secretary to Jeremy Corbyn and was Liverpool Walton MP in 2010-17.
