Sindh Nahin Jaun Ga: Sh Rasheed files request to stay in Islamabad, fears threat to life

The former interior minister, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, is in a bit of a pickle. He has filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) against the physical custody being handed over to the police forces of Sindh and Punjab.
This is in connection to the statement made by Mr. Ahmed regarding a conspiracy allegedly plotted by ex-president Asif Zardari to murder PTI chief Imran Khan. The IHC bench led by Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri will hear the petition next week.
In his petition, Mr. Ahmed alleges that the Pakistan Democratic Movement-led coalition government has registered identical FIRs against him on flimsy grounds in different parts of the country. The former interior minister, who is also the head of the Awami Muslim League, claimed that the allegations of the murder conspiracy were initially made by PTI Chairman Imran Khan. However, Mr. Ahmed was arrested for reiterating the same statement in a TV interview.
Mr. Ahmed expressed that he feared for his life as Sindh police planned to take him to the southern province. He also referred to a Supreme Court judgement that had barred the registration of more than one FIR for a particular incident. The petitioner requested the IHC to set aside the FIR registered against him by the Aabpara police station of Islamabad and to restrain the Islamabad police from handing over his custody to the police of other provinces.
The former minister was sent to Adiala jail on judicial remand for 14 days after the judicial magistrate of Aabpara rejected the prosecution’s request to extend physical remand. The Balochistan police have also registered an FIR against Mr. Ahmed on the charges of using abusive language against the foreign minister and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari.

Ahmed has taken legal action in the IHC to address his concerns regarding threats to his life and the legality of the FIRs registered against him. The IHC bench will hear the petition next week and make a decision based on the arguments presented by both parties.
