Not vaccinated? Sorry you can’t marry in Sindh

KARACHI: As the COVID positivity ratio in Karachi has soared to an alarming 23 percent in wake of the spread of the Delta variant, authorities in Sindh announced stern curbs including vaccination as a prerequisite for getting hitched in the southeastern province.

Reports quoting a notification of home ministry cited a ban on getting married besides attending wedding ceremonies of others. The notification further reads that all citizens will have to furnish their vaccination certificates in order to attend the wedding halls, markets, cattle markets, restaurants, and during travel in public transport.

It was reported that the recent curbs came into effect to stem the fourth wave of the deadly disease. A positivity ratio of a staggering 23 percent was reported in the country’s largest metropolis.

Furthermore, the Delta variant – a vulnerable mutated variant of Covid-19 which was first found in India – was detected in most of the infections reported.

Health officials while alarming the masses said if the cases continue to increase, the death toll in the South Asian country is also likely to get higher in near future. Meanwhile, medical facilities in Karachi are on the verge of reaching their full capacity owing to the recent spike.

Earlier, the Provincial Coronavirus Taskforce of Sindh closed educational institutions, while indoor dining along with a number of activities were banned as new cases continue to increase.

Meanwhile, the recent curbs including no wedding option for anti-vaxxers are the follow up of the incumbent government plan to vaccinate about 70 percent of the population by the end of this year.

In June, the authorities in the country’s most populous province Punjab proposed to block the SIM cards of the unvaccinated people who refuse vaccines in light of conspiracies running across the globe. Later, the idea was dropped due to a number of factors including vaccines shortage.

As the 25 percent population of the world has been vaccinated amid the mass vaccination campaigns, the pace of vaccination in Pakistan is still one of the low-ranked. Mainly, due to lack of education, misconceptions, vaccine hesitancy, and various propagandas.
