‘Marriage rules’: Sadaf Kanwal sparks debate as she called for ‘superior role for husbands’

KARACHI: Pakistani model Sadaf Kanwal for another time faced severe backlash from Pakistani liberals as she proposed her ‘marriage rules’ which triggered quite a stir on the social platforms.

It all started with an interview with Hamaray Mehman on ARY. Social media users believed that the model has reduced feminism to household chores and taking care of the husbands as she said ‘husband must be given more respect because he earns and spends on the family, adding that my rules are simple, one should respect our husband as they are our culture’.

Soon after the clips from the interview went viral, a large number of social media users started lambasting her, and Sadaf and Shahroz even topped Twitter trends.

It seems like her bold statements were hard to digest for a school of thought how as she advocated a greater status for men for taking care of the family.

Responding to the interviewer, Sadaf said ‘I have to pick up shoes of my husband, I will iron his clothes, which I don’t do, I do very little, but I know where Sherry’s clothes are. But I know where each thing of Sherry’s is. And I should know when Sherry has to eat, and what he is eating, because I am his wife.

Meanwhile, she also lambasted Aurat March and feminism in her latest interview. ‘These days a lot of liberals have arrived. My thinking is that feminism [is] me taking care of a man, my husband and respecting him and doing whatever I can, whatever I have been taught’.

Others believe that Sadaf’s interpretation of feminism is ‘prejudiced and patriarchal’. Her remarks, especially ascribed toward feminism, have prompted a huge ire from many people who argued that ‘women like herself don’t represent those who are oppressed’ and subjected to violence. Some even shared his old clip opposing conservative school of thought.

Following the uproar, a group questioned the model whether men wanted maids or marriages while others called her out for using feminism for personal benefit.

The liberal brigade, who claimed that being a feminist doesn’t mean you can’t take care of your spouse, termed his views to misogyny by clearly missing the fact that Aurat March recently advocated slogans like Apna Khana Khud Banao and Shadi kay elawa or bahot kaam hain.

Amid all the schooling, some even trolled her with hilarious memes.

Earlier in May last year, Sadaf and Shahroz got hitched in a simple ceremony. Their marriage also sparked controversy after the son of legendary actor Behroze Sabwari parted ways with his wife of seven years, Syra Yousaf [ a model, actor, and former video jockey, over ‘irreconcilable differences.

Previously, it was speculated that Shehroze dated her before the marriage and that was the reason for the couple’s divorce. Shahroz was also bashed as he negated any romantic connection with Sadaf at first and said that they are ‘just friends.’ Many social media users, during the roasting sessions, shared pictures of Sadaf with the duo.
