PESHAWAR – Born without vision, Dr. Habib Nawaz, is the only visually-impaired student in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the northwestern region of Pakistan, to complete her Ph.D. in education.
The scholar recently completed her doctorate from the Institute of Research and Education, the University of Peshawar in education for blind children, as Nawaz found a lack of facilities for visually impaired and special children at educational institutes.
Reports quoting Nawaz cited that the man successfully defended his thesis wherein experts from the fields participated.
Nawaz, in his thesis, claimed that ‘all such institutes were under the administrative control of Social Welfare department where the officers were not having the required expertise and capacity to help the special children grow mentally and physically.’
The visually impaired person who achieved the highest academic level said ‘there was so much to do for the health, hygiene, education and other matters of the special children in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Formation of a special care commission for blind children in the province is the need of the hour to ensure proper and timely facilitates at all state-owned institutions, he concluded.

Dr. Habib Nawaz while speaking about the landmark he achieved said that a blind person could also get higher education and become a useful citizen of the society, adding that disabled people could also fulfill their dreams provided they didn’t make the physical disability an excuse and do their utmost efforts with devotion and commitment.
Earlier in the year 1999, Farzana Suleman Poonawala achieved the title of country’s first Ph.D. doctorate after she earned the highest academic award on the contributions of great Islamic scholar Abul A’la Maududi. Farzana, who is a lecturer in Islamic Studies in Karachi, also conferred the Medal of Excellence.
