Do you know why Sindh MPA wants all adults married at 18?

KARACHI – Member of Provincial Assembly and Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal leader Syed Abdul Rasheed proposed a law which would make marriage compulsory for adults aged 18 and also imposed fines on parents in case of delay.

The bill ‘The Sindh Compulsory Marriage Act, 2021’ has yet to be tabled is making headlines all over the national media. According to the bill proposed by the provincial lawmaker, parents of an unmarried adult who crossed the age of 18 years will have to submit an undertaking with the acceptable reason of delay before the Deputy Commissioner of the District. Adding that if they failed to report to the public administrative officer, they will be imposed a fine of Rs500 – a mere amount.

Following the development, the lawmaker from the Southern East also shot a video clip citing the reason for submitting the unusual rule. According to Rasheed, the motive behind the proposed bill back with the teachings of Islam, which called for marriage if the boy and the girl have attained puberty. He further stressed the austerity in wedding ceremonies as the hefty sum forced many families to delay or avoid the marriage.

Shah, by proposing the bill, looked toward the incumbent authorities to play their part in making marriages easy as per the teachings of Islam.

Government initiative in this matter is paramount important as of now, he said adding that he also hoped that marriage at an early age would be helpful in supporting the youngsters besides cutting indecent activities. Rasheed while speaking with a media outlet told that the proposed bill will also help in curbing sexual assault cases.

Meanwhile, many of the other provincial lawmakers also expressed opinions and most of them negated the suggestion saying the bill is not likely to pass, as forcing marriage without considering the financial stability will be haphazard.

Let it be known that Pakistan’s upper house of Parliament passed a bill which proposed the marriageable age for girls to 18 but this is only passed at a level in Sindh as the legal age for marriage in the remaining provinces remains 16 for girls and 18 for boys.
