The Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust has been barred from hosting a fundraising event at a local hotel in Islamabad, as the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration has revoked the previously issued No-Objection Certificate (NOC).
Initially, the district administration in Islamabad had granted an NOC to the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust, permitting them to collect funds for the cancer facility being built in Karachi. However, the NOC was rescinded without providing any reasons. A senior official from Shaukat Khanum Hospital confirmed to a local media outlet that the Additional District Magistrate of ICT withdrew the permission. The official further disclosed that the event, which aimed to raise funds for the ongoing construction of a cancer hospital in Karachi, involved a musical concert and dinner.
In a communication addressed to the hospital’s administration, the Additional District Magistrate of ICT cautioned about potential legal consequences if the hospital proceeded with the event without the requisite permission. Despite earnest attempts by Shaukat Khanum’s top management to secure approval from the administration, their endeavors proved unsuccessful. Subsequently, in light of the inability to obtain permission, the hospital’s administration formally announced the fundraiser’s cancellation, citing unavoidable circumstances. They mentioned intentions to reveal a new date soon. According to sources within the ICT administration, the event’s cancellation is attributed to conditions imposed by international financial institutions, which require charitable organizations to disclose donor details and undergo audits.
The involved private charitable organization, however, declined to furnish the necessary information, precipitating the cancellation of the fundraising event. Contrarily, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital contested the claims made by the ICT administration, asserting that they were never approached for the required information. Additionally, they emphasized that all essential details, including donor information and audit reports, are readily accessible on Shaukat Khanum’s official website.
