Ban on onboard meals revoked in domestic flights despite uptick in Covid infections

KARACHI: Despite the recent spike in Covid-19 infections in wake of Delta variant spread, the Civil Aviation Authority allowed in-flight meals for local flights, local media reported Monday.

Reports quoting the new directives of Civil Aviation Authority, the state-owned aviation authority, cited that domestic flights will serve packed meals to their passengers – as it used to offer earlier.

The recent directives of CAA revoked the ban which was placed during the second wave of the deadly virus in November last year. The ban was placed in wake of fears of Covid spread as passengers need to remove face masks while eating on board. Serving food also involves contact of the cabin crew with passengers which can further contribute to virus spread.

In the recent notification, wherein adherence to Covid SOPs has been stressed, CAA noted that new SOPs will be applicable until October 31.

Earlier before Ramadan, the CAA wrote a letter to the Aviation Division to recommend lifting the ban on meal services for domestic flight passengers.

On the directives of Pakistan’s top monitoring body on Covid, local flights discontinued serving meals on domestic and international flights in a bid to stem the spread of the novel disease.

Meanwhile, Pakistan reported more than 2,000 Covid cases while the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) reported a national positivity ratio of 5.25 percent. At least 37 deaths were also reported during the last 24 hours.

The total number of Covid cases in the South Asian country has soared to around 1 million, while the number of active cases has increased to nearly 50,000.
