Karachi newlyweds gunned down by bride’s family in ‘honor killing’

KARACHI: A young newlywed couple in Karachi died a horrible death at the hands of the bride’s brothers in the latest honor killing in the southeastern region of Pakistan.

ON correspondent quoting sources said the young girl named Rubi Bibi tied the knot without the consent of her family around two months ago.

The duo was shot dead as the brothers of the slain girl opened fire in the name of honour. Amid the firing, two of the persons also sustained injuries.

The family of Musa while speaking to the media said the couple got hitched around two months ago while the father of the 19-year-old, Noor Sahib Shah, was against the marriage.

Meanwhile, the family of the deceased girl is said to be on the run since they allegedly killed them. Police haven’t lodged an FIR while further proceedings are uncertain as for now.

Honour killings are in a form of a pandemic in the South Asian country, as women are its predominant victims. Hundreds of Pakistani women are killed at the hands of family members for supposed immoral behavior. Many families stage such incidents by picking a member to do the murder, and then formally forgive the killer.

A Human Rights Watch, quoting a report, cited that almost 1,000 women are murdered in Pakistan in the name of honour each year, however; the true figure is probably much higher because many cases are never reported.
