The main event of UFC 264 between Irish MMA star Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier ended in a shocking fashion as the former two-weight champ suffered a brutal broken leg in the opening round.
The game ended just after the first round as American fighter Poirier clinched the technical knockout after the gruesome injury of McGregor. The 32-year-old missed a punch in the final seconds, before stepping backward. At that moment, he trapped his foot under himself.
The former Cage Warrior then fell and the round was over he pointed that his leg was broken. In the clip of the ill-fated event for McGregor, he can be seen sitting on the mat while holding his leg. Later, his leg was put into an air cast and was taken out of the arena on a stretcher.

Speaking about the incident, McGregor raged about his misfortune saying that “I was boxing the head off him, kicking the leg off him, [he was doing] the usual, diving to close the distance. This is not over — if I have to take this outside with him, it’s on the outside.”
Adding that, “Just the thing had separated, and I bleedin’ landed on the wonky leg like Anderson Silva that one time, something similar to that”.

Meanwhile, McGregor will undergo surgery to repair a suspected broken leg.
The injured starfighter seems unbending that he’s not finished in the fighting ring after suffering consecutive defeats to Dustin Poirier.
He also took to his official Instagram where he shared a picture of himself being taken away from the arena in Las Vegas. “You need people like me”, he captioned the post.

Furthermore, the incident posed serious doubts on the future of MMA fighters as he will likely spend an extended period on the sidelines, with no guarantee for a comeback.
This is for the second time in less than six months when the Irish athlete failed to continue after the first round at UFC 264.
