Global Outrage after burning of the Quran in Sweden; World Leaders Respond

Muslims all around the world have been outraged at the Holy Quran being insulted in the capital of Sweden during a protest that the authorities had permitted.

The incident has been severely criticized by Pakistan, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Iran, among other Muslim nations. Angry with Sweden over the incident, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said Ankara will never submit to a policy of provocation or threat. He declared, ‘We will teach the haughty Westerners that it is not free speech to attack the sacred values of Muslims.’

To voice their opposition to the desecration of the Holy Quran, the United Arab Emirates has summoned the Swedish ambassador. The Swedish government’s approval of the burning of copies of the Quran on Thursday has also been denounced by Qatar, who called it ‘heinous’ conduct that took place specifically on Eid. The Holy Quran has been subject to multiple violations using the excuse of freedom of expression, and the foreign ministry of that particular nation has cautioned against such acts, stating that they fuel hatred and violence, disrupt peaceful coexistence, and reveal an unacceptable hypocrisy. The act of burning, as stated by Kuwait’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is an alarming and incendiary action that ignites the sentiments of Muslims worldwide.

It urged the governments and members of the world community ‘to take responsibility for swift action to renounce feelings of hatred, extremism, and religious intolerance.’ On Thursday, the incident prompted Iraq to summon the Swedish ambassador. It referred to the behavior as ‘racist’ and ‘irresponsible’ and added that it denounced ‘the repeated acts of burning copies of the holy Koran by individuals with extremist and disturbed minds.’
