Malala Delivers Powerful Speech at Commonwealth Games’ Opening Ceremony

Malala Yousafzai, the campaigner and Nobel Prize winner, spoke at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony on Friday, emphasizing the value of girls’ education.

This was a wonderful moment for Pakistan. Instead of Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles represented the United Kingdom at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony, which was held in Birmingham. As he read out the Queen’s message to the Commonwealth countries, the Prince declared the games to be open.

During the ceremony, Malala Yousafzai represented Pakistan and used a documentary to emphasize the value of girls’ education in her country. In her speech, Malala emphasized the value of girls’ education and said it was an honor to be present at the event. She stated that it is a privilege to be here for the opening ceremony and she welcomes everyone to Birmingham.

We all share hope for the future with the young athletes who will compete over the coming weeks. They stand in for millions of girls and boys throughout the Commonwealth. A future in which all children may attend school, where women are allowed to participate freely in society, and where families are able to live peacefully and honorably. Every child ought to have the opportunity to realize their full potential and chase their wildest goals, she said, adding that the young athletes competing in the Games serve as a reminder of this.

Over a crammed 11 days in the English Midlands, competitors from 72 nations and territories will compete for medals in 19 sports. 103 athletes, coaches, and officials are representing Pakistan in the games. Up to 68 Pakistani athletes, including 15 members of the women’s cricket squad, will compete in 12 different sports at these competitions. Men’s hockey, women’s T20 cricket, swimming, badminton, boxing, wrestling, weightlifting, judo, squash, gymnastics, and table tennis are some of the sports in which participants will compete.

Birmingham won the first medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games with a 72-car Union Jack shaped like a gigantic roaring bull. The ceremony at the Alexander Stadium marked the beginning of Britain’s largest multisport event since the 2012 London Olympics and was filled with allusions to the culture and history of the host city.

The ceremony last night was episodic, just like the one in 2012, and it covered the West Midlands’ history from the early industrial and manufacturing age to the present-day innovation and cultural change. The show’s focal point was a massive raging bull that symbolized Birmingham’s renowned Bullring Market. The ten-meter-tall metal beast was fully armored. It took more than five months to build and more than 50 people to design.

To make the production as polished as possible, more than 1,500 cast members participated in more than 250 practice sessions. Following the performance, each Commonwealth team made a circuit around the stadium while proudly flying their national flag and waving to the spectators.
