A 25-year-old student of National Defence University, Islamabad – Komal Ali Shah – has been selected as the first Pakistani to participate in the Hiroshima-ICAN Academy on Nuclear Weapons and Global Security in 2021.
Initiated in 2019, Komal was chosen as one of the 41 participants picked up in 2021. She is not only the first Pakistani but also the first Pakistani woman to be inducted into this programme.
International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons or simply called it ICAN is working to gather civil society all across the world to raise voice for a common goal of decimating and prohibiting nuclear weapons.
In an interview, Komal said: “From educational point of view, she would enlighten the discussion by encouraging campaigns about nuclear disarmament attempts.” She went on to say that humanitarian aspects are often neglected whenever nuclear policies are devised.
Born in Karachi, young Komal Ali Shah has one younger brother. Following the completion of her schooling, her family shifted to Islamabad back in 2012. After shifting to the capital city, she finished her Master’s in Strategic and Nuclear Studies. At present, she is doing her M.Phil at the National Defence University.
