ITA meets Governor Punjab with “Mahol Saheliyan – A trilogy of books on Climate Justice”

CEO ITA Baela Raza Jamil presented ITA’s publications “Mahol Saheliyan – A trilogy of books on climate justice” to Governor Punjab Balighur Rehman to who appreciated the efforts for better understanding and learning in the younger generation.

Governor Punjab Balighur Rehman appreciated ITA’s Publications for standing out with brilliant books and also congratulated the author of the Mahol Saheliyan Maria Riaz for successfully writing and illustrating the books.

CEO ITA Baela Raza Jamil explained and highlighted the importance of the books published by ITA and its integration with the Single National curriculum.

The delegate of ITA included CEO Baela Raza Jamil, Author Maria Riaz, Program Manager Zain Ul Abideen, PLF coordinator Maria Mehmood and District Project Manager Farah Shah.

Highlighting the importance of the trilogy Mahol Saheliyan, Baela Raza Jamil said that the series on Climate Change are timely; these have been conceived and written from a gendered perspective inspired by ITA’s work in South Punjab “Siyani Sahelian”.

The trilogy covers diverse geographies of our country; the plains, mountains and coastal areas of Pakistan. They are embedded in SDG 4 and life skills and are well aligned to SDG 13 on Climate Change. ITA is pleased to share that these have been well reviewed by the National Curriculum Council (NCC) and the Ministry of Federal Education & Professional Training (MoFE&PT).

These series, we believe, are the first in this genre targeting girls who are on the front line of climate change, but never recognized for their vulnerability and potential transformative agency. The books are in Urdu with beautiful illustrations. They have been authored and illustrated by Maria Tauseef Riaz with technical reviews by climate change and language experts and editors: Afia Salam, Dr. Fouzia Perveen, Rumana Husain, Farah Shah and Arifa Nazle.

While explaining the work of ITA over the years Baela Raza also briefed his excellency that ITA’s Second Chance Program for Adolescent Girls called “Siyani Sahelian” has supported more than 50,000 direct adolescent girl beneficiaries and more than 350,000 indirect beneficiaries funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO) and in close collaboration with the School Education Department in South Punjab.

Moreover, she also informed His Excellency about the Digital Literacy Program (DLP) being active in the region and educating young girls with digital literacy to help them in understanding and generating income through their work. Pakistan Learning Project (PLP) has started different libraries at different locations throughout South Punjab and Five (5) more such learning classes are also in Bahawalpur and will start by the end of next month.

Acknowledging ITA’s contribution in Education, Governor Punjab appreciated this initiative of promoting climate change through Literature. He also expressed his keen interest on working for climate change as he sees it as a crisis to be solved and the younger generation to be educated on it. Governor Punjab was also presented with the following books – ITA/PLF Publications, Ek Sabaq Seekha, Hamara Adbi Jashan, Anokha Bagh, How Zebra Got its stripes, Pakistan Literacy PRoject’s 28 adapted books.

Governor Punjab Mohammad Balighur Rehman was pleased to see the work of ITA in the education sector and admired the continuous work ITA has been doing. He stands with ITA to ensure the smooth and steady flow of education for all and highlighted the importance of ASER PAKISTAN in key findings that help in establishing the details for improvement in the education sector.
