The Saida Waheed Gender Initiative (SWGI) is hosting events for Spring 2023’ from 7th Feb- 10th April. They hosted the ‘Why Period Art Matters’ event by Farah Ahamed on 21st Feb 2023.
The Saida Waheed Gender Initiative (SWGI) at LUMS functions as an academic hub with an emphasis on advancing gender-related research and discussions. The detail of the event given below.
On December 8th, to commemorate Dignified Menstruation Day, there was a live Instagram session titled Why Period Art Matters. The host of the event was Pan Macmillan, the company that publishes Period Matters. The discussion centered on the value of historical artwork as a means of self-discovery, community development, action, and education. Amna Mawaz Khan discussed how she created a menstruation dance, while Lyla FreeChild explained how she collected her menstrual blood and utilized it to create paintings.
Granaz Baloch described how she shattered a communal code of honor by leading a workshop on menstrual health and inviting participants to depict their monthly experiences in drawings and paintings.
Farah Ahamed gave an explanation of why she thought art was crucial for the book and how she went about selecting the artwork, making sure it included works by both famous male and female artists as well as the personal expressions of less well-known artists.
