WhatsApp Launches ‘Communities’

WhatsApp announced today that it is working on a new feature called “Communities” that would bring people together who have like interests and make group management easier.

A community is essentially a collection of groups that may be formed by anyone and joined by a large number of people. Users can also choose to get community-wide updates by opting in.

The functionality will also give admins new capabilities, such as the ability to send out announcement messages to everyone and control over which groups can be included.

End-to-end encryption will also be supported by communities. The change was made in response to user criticism that users were becoming disoriented as a result of the platform’s many groups.

People will be able to join together different groups under one tent with a structure that works for them using WhatsApp Communities. People can easily establish smaller discussion groups on topics that are important to them and receive updates posted to the broader Community.

In terms of discoverability, unlike other platforms, the platform has stated that it would not be giving the ability to search or discover new groups. Additionally, the platform will limit the number of groups to which messages can be forwarded from five to just one at a time, in order to reduce the spread of incorrect information among Community groups.

In addition, if WhatsApp becomes aware of unlawful, violent, or hateful activities within a Community, it will ban specific Community members or admins and dismantle the Community.

According to a recent update, groups will soon feature emoji reactions for messages, allowing users to respond to a single message without having to send emojis separately. Admins will be allowed to delete messages in a group, which will be wiped from everyone’s device in the same way that they were previously. File sharing, for example, is being updated to support files up to 2GB in size. Finally, one-tap voice calling with up to 32 persons is now possible.
