The Congress tricolour fell off the flagpole here on Tuesday morning as party president Sonia Gandhi attempted to unfurl it to commemorate the party’s 137th anniversary.
She unfurled the tricolour after a Congress worker strung the flag from the pole.
Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, AK Antony, and Mallikarjun Kharge were among the senior Congress leaders present at the party headquarters.
When it came time to unfurl the flag for the second time, the Congress president was noticeably agitated by the gaffe and was heard inquiring from a party staffer overseeing the proceedings whether the flag was firmly in position.
The party leadership voiced concern with the course of events, according to a senior leader, and asked those in charge of organising the occasion to be cautious.
In addition, instead of the shorter steel flagpole seen at the party headquarters, Congress officials had erected a taller steel flagpole.
