Violence at Pakistan vs. Afghanistan Match Results in Fine from UAE Authorities

Police in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has issued substantial fines to supporters who participated in the rioting following the match between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

A thrilling one-wicket victory for Pakistan against Afghanistan in this week’s Asia Cup match in Sharjah was deemed insulting by some Afghan supporters in attendance.

Videos of fans fighting and causing property damage to the stadium after Wednesday’s game went viral on social media. The Sharjah police punished the spectators engaged in the tragic incident with AED3, 000 (about Rs190, 000). The authorities have also warned that anyone involved in any subsequent incidents of this nature will be deported.

Pakistan defeated Afghanistan and advanced to Sunday’s T20 competition final thanks to Naseem Shah’s two sixes off Fazalhaq Farooqi in the game’s penultimate over. After dismissing the batsman and handing him a send-off, Pakistan’s Asif Ali and Afghanistan’s fast bowler Fareed Ahmad got into a furious argument. Before the players and the umpire intervened to diffuse the situation, an irate Asif made a gesture with his bat in the direction of Fareed. With videos of Afghan fans pulling off chairs and tossing them towards fans wearing Pakistani shirts, the escalating tempers moved from the pitch to the stands.

Ramiz Raja, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), also slammed rowdy fan conduct, saying that you don’t link hooliganism with cricket and this is unacceptable. Such a setting is not what this game desires. Really poor visuals were present. It had happened before, so this wasn’t entirely new. We should control our emotions, respect our supporters, and file a complaint with the International Cricket Council.

Raja is a member of the ICC working group, which is tasked with investigating the situation of cricket and its administration in Afghanistan following the Taliban’s takeover of that country last year. On September 8, the Afghanistan Cricket Board issued two tweets urging people to ‘work together’ to strengthen the ‘cricket fraternity’ and ‘somehow try to share the love.’ Cricket is thought of as a phenomenon of peace and closer ties between nations. Let’s cooperate to strengthen the cricket community. Cricket prohibits us from displaying unpleasant feelings on the pitch and turning the friendly environment into one of violence, read one of the tweets.

Shafiq Stanikzai, the previous CEO of the Afghanistan Cricket Board, had before urged Asif to be suspended due to his hostility on social media. Stanikzai stated that any bowler has the right to celebrate, but being physical is not appropriate at all. Asif Ali’s ignorance is at an extreme level, and he should be suspended from the rest of the competition.

Shoaib Akhtar, a former Pakistani fast bowler, responded to this by saying that it was an unforgettable match against people we have loved & supported always, but horrible behavior and arrogance exposed them in a poor light. Afghan players were put right back into their place by 19-year-old boy Naseem Shah.
