TikTok dethrones Google to become most popular internet destination

According to Cloudflare, TikTok dethroned Google from the top spot in February, March, and June of this year, and has held the position since August.

The viral video app has generated more hits than the American search engine, according to Cloudflare, an IT security company.

Google was first last year, with TikTok, Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, and Netflix rounding out the top ten.

The Covid epidemic is thought to be one of the causes for Tiktok’s rise in popularity, as lockdowns meant individuals were stuck at home and seeking for ways to pass the time.

According to data provider Sensor Tower, TikTok had been downloaded over three billion times by July this year.

The social network, which is owned by a Chinese corporation called Bytedance, already has over one billion active users worldwide and is still growing.

The app is named Douyin in China, and it runs on a different network to comply with the country’s censorship restrictions.

In September of 2016, Douyin was first released. Users under the age of 14 will be limited to 40 minutes per day on the platform starting this year, according to Chinese regulations.

After combining with Musical.ly a Chinese social media platform that allowed users to submit videos of themselves lip-syncing to songs, TikTok was introduced abroad in 2018.

The social media site has a track record of stirring up controversy. Musical.ly was found to have hosted content created by underage users on purpose in 2019, incurring it a temporary ban in India, a counter-intelligence investigation in the United States, and a record £4.3 million fine.

Politicians and regulators outside China have expressed worries about security and privacy as one of the few internationally successful Chinese apps.

TikTok was compelled to deny last year that it was under Chinese government control.

TikTok’s head of public policy for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, Theo Bertram, stated that any request for data from China will be refused.

The app features a wide range of short videos, including humour, dance, and politics, among other genres.

Make-up artist @abbyroberts, with 17.4 million followers, is the most popular creator in the United Kingdom.

Because of his viral films at railway stations discussing trains and celebrating them as they pass, @Francis.Bourgeois, who has 1.6 million followers, abandoned his job last year to become a full-time trainspotter.
