Three On-Duty Marines Detained For Taking Part in the Incident at the US Capitol on January 6

This week, three intelligence-related active-duty Marines were detained for reportedly breaking into the US Capitol building on January 6, 2021, with a group of Trump supporters.

One of the three is believed to have expressed support for a second civil war. Disorderly conduct in a Capitol facility is one of the allegations that Cpl. Micah Coomer, Sgts. Joshua Abate and Dodge Dale Hellonen are facing. According to a government document, Coomer’s first exposure to FBI officers came from Instagram posts he made of himself inside the Capitol. Agents looked into his account, and they came across communications he sent to a different user saying he was waiting for a second civil war.

This nation is completely corrupt, says the speaker. The affidavit quotes Coomer as saying, “We genuinely need a fresh restart. The boogaloo is what I’m waiting for.” The associate inquired, “What’s a boogaloo?” Coomer responded, “Civil war 2,” invoking a rallying cry employed by some far-right organizations to call for a second civil war, according to court filings. Court records state that during his examination for a security clearance, Abate acknowledged that he had entered the Capitol during the melee with two “buddies.” In the interview, Abate allegedly claimed that he decided not to disclose his role because he felt the riot was being “portrayed badly.”

According to court documents, none of the accused have acknowledged guilt or had legal representation. According to military records, Coomer is identified as an Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance System Engineer based out of Camp Pendleton in California. Abate and Hellonen are both Special Communication Signals Analysts for the Marine Corps Cryptologic Support Battalion stationed at Fort Meade in Maryland and Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, respectively. In a statement to CNN on Friday, a Marine Corps spokesman said that the organization is “aware of an investigation and the claims” and that it is “completely cooperating with proper authorities in support of the inquiry.”

The two soldiers were eventually identified by their military identification cards as Abate and Hellonen. Coomer is reportedly seen walking around the Capitol with the investigators in the video footage. The three guys allegedly entered the Capitol rotunda as they made their way around the structure, put a red MAGA hat on one of the monuments, and then posed for a picture with it. According to court records, the group remained inside the Capitol for about an hour.
